Leadership Lessons We Learned in Childhood: How Trust Shifts Responsibility.
"I TRUST YOU" - 3 Words That Can Change Everything in Delegation.
When I was a kid, my mother used to go to school as a teacher. My brother and I would stay home alone for almost 6–7 hours.
You can imagine what two kids would do in a locked room for that long; we fought, made crafts, created a mess, and sometimes fought so much that even the bedsheet didn’t survive.
Every evening when my mother returned, she’d walk into a room that looked like a storm had passed through, with toys scattered, papers everywhere, and the bedsheet never in its place. And after returning home, she would clean all the mess herself.
That was our everyday routine, until one Monday morning.
Before leaving, my mother called my brother and said, “You’re grown up now. You’re a good boy. When I come back, I don’t want to see a messy room. Everything should be in its place.”
I quickly jumped in, trying to defend myself, “But he’s the one who makes all the mess!”
She just smiled and said something I’ll never forget: “No, I trust him. He’ll keep the room clean from today.” Then she gently patted him on the back and left for school.
After about seven hours, she returned home. Can you guess how the room looked that evening?
To her surprise, the room was spotless. The bedsheet was neatly in place. Everything had changed.
Why? Just because of those three words—"I TRUST YOU.”
Those words were so powerful that my brother completely changed his behavior. He didn’t just stop making a mess; he even stopped me from doing it.
That’s how powerful those words are.
My mother was so happy that she hugged him with tears in her eyes.
At that time, I couldn’t understand how just a few words could change behavior so drastically. But now, when I work with teams and leaders, I see the deeper truth in that moment.
It was because of three simple words: I TRUST YOU.
The Power of Trust in Leadership
Those three words do something magical, they shift responsibility.
When you say “I trust you”, you’re not just giving someone a task you’re giving them ownership.
They start thinking differently. They act differently. Because now, it’s not about instructions… it’s about trust. And no one wants to break the trust of someone who genuinely believes in them.
In workplaces, we often complain:
- “People don’t take ownership.”
- “They don’t perform.”
- “They don’t go the extra mile.”
But sometimes, it’s not a performance problem — it’s a trust problem.
Maybe people don’t take ownership because no one ever told them, “I trust you with this.”
Trust Transfers Responsibility
When leaders show trust, something beautiful happens: responsibility moves from the leader to the team.
And that’s what leadership truly is: not doing everything yourself, but empowering others to take charge.
Yes, they might fail. Yes, they’ll make mistakes. But that’s okay. Because trust doesn’t mean blind belief; it means standing beside them when things go wrong and giving them another chance.
When people feel trusted, they start owning their results not because they’re told to, but because they want to.
A Thought to Leave You With
Whether you’re leading a team, mentoring someone, or even raising a child try saying these three words more often: “I TRUST YOU.”
You’ll be amazed at how much responsibility, confidence, and growth those words can create.
Now I’d love to hear from you —
Has someone trusted you, and you rose to the occasion?
Or did you trust someone, and they surprised you by owning it completely?
